About the Role
The Company is seeking an Assistant General Counsel to join its legal team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing legal representation, analysis, and counsel on a wide range of complex issues, with a focus on grantmaking, governance, and operations. This role requires a deep understanding of the legal requirements that private foundations must follow and experience in both U.S. and international operations. The Assistant General Counsel will also be involved in policy development, risk mitigation, and will serve as the legal lead for specific grantmaking initiatives. Key responsibilities include legal analysis, advising on applicable laws, ensuring legal best practices, and supporting the Foundation's mission through strategic and inclusive legal counsel. Applicants must have a J.D. from an accredited institution, a minimum of 7 years' of related work experience, and a strong preference for admission to the California bar or eligibility for in-house exemption. The ideal candidate will have a background in advising private foundations, tax-exempt organizations, or comparable experience in a large nonprofit setting. Strategic counsel, governance, and a commitment to the values of the Foundation are essential. The role demands a professional with a proven track record in legal judgment, integrity, and the ability to influence decision-making in a collaborative manner. The Assistant General Counsel will also be involved in training, process improvement, and exploring the use of emerging technologies in legal work.
