Position Summary

This position provides direct clinical support to the ophthalmologist/oculoplastics specialist by performing ophthalmic diagnostic testing, assisting with patient care, and documenting medical encounters in real time. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, patient-focused, and able to work efficiently in a fast-paced medical environment.

Primary Responsibilities Clinical & Technical Duties (Ophthalmic Technician):

· Know ocular and medical terminology associated with ophthalmology.

· Understand and be familiar with patient scheduling and schedule management.

· Greet, room, and prepare patients for examination.

· Obtain and document detailed medical/ocular history, medications, and allergies.

· Know and understand common ocular diseases and protocols.

· Contact lens insertion and removal procedures

· Measure and document visual acuity, pupillary responses, motility, confrontation of visual fields, and intraocular pressure.

· Perform specialized ophthalmic diagnostic testing, which may include:

o OCT

o Visual fields

o Topography

o IOL measurements

o Fundus photography

· Administer eye drops including dilation, anesthetic drops, and diagnostic agents as directed by the provider.

· Assist with in-office procedures (lid lesion removal, chalazion, injections, medication administration procedures, oculoplastic procedures, etc.).

· Prepare procedure trays, maintain sterile technique, and ensure proper instrument cleaning and autoclaving.

· Clean and maintain exam rooms, equipment, and clinical supplies.

· Educate patients on treatment plans, medications, pre-op and post-op instructions.

· Follow HIPAA, OSHA, and infection control protocols.

· Other duties as indicated by the leadership.

Documentation & Administrative Duties (Medical Scribe):

· Document patient encounters in the EMR during exams, including history, examination findings, assessments, and plans.

· Enter diagnostic orders, prescriptions, referrals, and testing as directed by the physician.

· Review prior records, imaging, testing results, and outside notes to prepare charts.

· Update follow-up plans, surgical notes, and procedure details in the EMR.

· Ensure accurate, compliant, and timely clinical documentation.

· Communicate effectively with staff and assist with maintaining clinic flow.

· Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA regulations.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • High School diploma or equivalent, required.  

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in ophthalmology, preferred.

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:

  • N/A

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION PREFERRED:

  • Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF POSITION:

  • Talking. This position requires expressing or exchanging ideas through the spoken word. This position must participate in activities to convey detailed or essential verbal instructions to physicians, staff, and vendors accurately and succinctly.
  • Hearing. This position is required to perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, including the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and make the discriminations in sound.
  • Repetitive motion. This position requires substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and fingers while working on reports on the computer.
  • Sedentary work. This position may need to occasionally exert up to 10 pounds of force to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Walking and standing are required frequently and throughout the day.
  • Visual Requirements. This position is required to have close visual acuity (with or without correction) to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; and reading.
  • Environmental Conditions. This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as in typical office work.)
